The Australian: Disability levy 'would mean more savings'

THE Gillard government will today face calls for yet another tax levy, to raise $5 billion to fund a national disability insurance scheme.

But economic modelling shows the program could pay for itself if it helps just a small percentage of its clients into work.

The Productivity Commission will today hand down its report into a national disability insurance scheme and it is expected to deliver the government a political headache with calls for a Medicare levy-style payment of about 0.8 per cent to fund the scheme.
