RECRUITING and retaining
well-qualified employees, especially local workers, in remote areas
of Australia is one of the big challenges facing businesses based
there.
Mining companies have become adept
at marketing themselves to prospective employees and have led the
way in creating job opportunities for indigenous and non-indigenous
people who reside within a mine's vicinity.
One of the keys to their success
has been top-notch training programs.
Oz Minerals, which owns gold-copper
mine Prominent Hill in South Australia, about 140km south of Coober
Pedy, is a case in point.
The mining company's pre-employment
training program won the training initiative award at the South
Australian government training awards last year.
