New package to support redundant workers from BlueScope Steel

Date published : 23  August  2011

In response to BlueScope Steel's decision to reduce its operations, the Australian Government has announced an assistance package to support BlueScope workers made redundant in Illawarra, New South Wales and the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.

Former BlueScope Steel employees made redundant will be able to receive immediate access to employment services with a provider of their choice: They:

  • are able to directly register with a Job Services Australia (JSA) provider;
  • can contact Centrelink who will assess their eligibility for income support;
  • need to bring a letter or other evidence of redundancy from BlueScope Steel with them;
  • must register with an employment services provider within six months of the date of their redundancy;
  • are eligible for Stream 3 or higher services depending on their individual circumstances;
  • attract a $2,880 Employment Pathway Fund credit (the Standard Stream 3 credit of $1,100 with an additional $1,780) which their JSA provider can use to purchase assistance and services relevant to their individual needs that will help them find employment; and
  • may be eligible for Disability Employment Services if they have a disability or mental health condition.

This assistance is available for workers who were made redundant from eligible BlueScope Steel sites on or after 22 August 2011.
