MAIN FINDINGS
Employment rose in the majority of States and Territories
over the year to the December quarter 2011. The largest increases
in employment (in percentage terms) were recorded in the Northern
Territory (up by 2.4 per cent), Western Australia (up by 1.2 per
cent), South Australia (up by 0.7 per cent), Victoria and
Queensland (both up by 0.5 per cent). Employment fell in the
Australian Capital Territory (down by 0.4 per cent) and the most
populous State of New South Wales (down by 0.1 per cent). The
unemployment rate increased in half the States and both the
Territories over the year to the December quarter 2011. The largest
increases were recorded in the Northern Territory (up by 1.8
percentage points to 4.2 per cent), Tasmania (up by 0.6 percentage
points to 6.0 per cent) and the Australian Capital Territory (up by
0.4 percentage points to 3.5 per cent). South Australia recorded
the biggest decline in the unemployment rate over the year to the
December quarter 2011 (down by 0.3 percentage points to 5.2 per
cent), followed by Queensland (down by 0.1 percentage points to 5.2
per cent) and Western Australia (down by 0.1 percentage points to
3.9 per cent).
