MEDIA RELEASE

Australia's Unemployment
Rate Falls to 4.9 Per Cent
Labour force figures released today
by the ABS show that Australia's unemployment rate declined
from 5.1
per cent as reported last month to 4.9 per cent in April 2012,
remaining one of the lowest rates of
unemployment in the industrialised world and less than half that of
the Euro area.
The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Bill Shorten,
welcomed today's result, highlighting that around 800,000 jobs had
been created since the La bor Government came to office in November
2007.
This is in stark contrast with the
disappearance of around 27 million jobs in the rest of the world.
Since the beginning of the year, the Australian economy has created
around 87,000 jobs.
Today's result is yet another example of Australia's strong
economic performance.
