A local solution to entrenched poverty
Fighting unemployment and improving the lives of the
disadvantaged are at the heart of nine community-led projects in
NSW to be funded by the Gillard Labor Government. People in Wyong,
Shellharbour and Bankstown will benefit from a range of practical
ideas proposed by members of their own communities. Minister for
Human Services Senator Kim Carr today announced funding for nine
projects in areas battling high unemployment and poverty. "Local
people know what local people need and I'm pleased to see the
number of community groups in New South Wales that came forward
with practical help for people in their communities," Senator Kim
Carr said. "These projects show the range and diversity of each
area. The Bridge to Independence project in Bankstown at the
Peppertree Café social enterprise trains disadvantaged kids
or those with mental illness in hospitality. "In Wyong a local
group will help young parents finish high school and develop
positive life skills; and in Shellharbour the Aboriginal Community
and Youth Association will create an environment that encourages
young indigenous people to make it through school and training.
